Sparring & training partners

Find a sparring partner who wants the same session you do.

Matwork Match connects you with nearby people who train your martial art, want to work on the same things at the same intensity, and are free at the same times. That covers drilling partners, pad holders, positional rounds and live sparring.

Why it's hard

The problem with finding a training partner.

Most people find training partners by asking around the gym after class. That works until your schedule changes, you move, you want extra rounds outside class, or you want to work on something your usual partners don't. Group chats and forum posts help a little, but they don't tell you whether someone wants light drilling or hard sparring, or whether you're ever free at the same time.

A good session needs three things to line up: the same art, the same plan for the session, and a time you're both free. Matwork checks all three before it shows you anyone.

How it works

Three things have to match.

  1. 1

    Your art and activities

Choose the arts you train and the specific activities you're up for. You're only matched on activities you both picked.

  2. 2

    Your intensity

Set an intensity limit for each art. Someone who wants light technical work won't be paired with someone who wants hard rounds.

  3. 3

    Your schedule

Add the times you're usually free. Profiles show the days you overlap, and the scheduler only offers times you're both free.

Every art

What you can find a partner for.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Drilling, positional rounds from a set position, flow rolling, or full rolls.

Boxing

Pad work, technical sparring at light contact, or harder rounds if you both want them.

Muay Thai & kickboxing

Pads, clinch work, technical sparring, and partner conditioning.

Wrestling & judo

Shots and throws on a crash pad, hand fighting, groundwork, and live goes.

Karate & taekwondo

Kata or forms practice, partner drills, and point or continuous sparring.

MMA

Cage work, wall wrestling, ground and pound drills, and mixed rounds.

Train something else? Add a custom art with your own named activities and intensity.

Safety & etiquette

Training with someone new.

Meet at a gym or open mat

Pick a public place with mats and other people around, especially for your first session together.

Agree on intensity first

Say out loud what you're doing and how hard before the first round, even if you already agreed in the app.

Start light

Do the first round at a pace below what you agreed. It's easier to build up than to recover from a bad first impression or an injury.

Bring your own gear

Gloves, shin guards, mouthguard, headgear or a clean gi. Ask in chat what the other person is bringing.

Tap early, stop anytime

Either person can end a round or a session at any time, for any reason. That's normal, not rude.

Use block and report

If someone ignores your limits, you can unmatch, block or report them in the app. Nobody can message you unless you both asked to train.

FAQ

Questions

How do I find a sparring partner near me?

Set up Matwork Match with your art, the activities you want (drilling, pad work, positional rounds or live sparring), your intensity limit, your area and when you’re free. Discover then shows nearby people whose plans and schedules overlap with yours. When you both request to train, you can message and propose a session.

Can I find a partner just to drill, not spar?

Yes. Activities are matched one by one, so if you only want technical drilling or light pad work, you’ll only be matched with people who want that too. Live sparring is never suggested unless you both chose it.

How does Matwork keep intensity at the right level?

Each art has its own intensity limit. Session proposals only offer activities and intensity you have both accepted, and both people’s settings are checked again when a session is accepted.

Can I choose to train only with women, or only with men?

Yes. Practice and live-training preferences are set separately, and a match only appears when both people’s preferences allow it. Preferences are never widened automatically, and if you keep your gender private it is never shown.

Does Matwork work for cross-training?

Yes. You can list several arts, and you can choose to be shown to people from other arts who want to cross-train, for example a BJJ player looking for wrestling partners.
